Can software developers make their applications greener by designing them to consume less power and fewer resources? The answer is a definite yes. One way is to reduce time-wasting, resource-hogging bells and whistles. Clean, simple user interfaces are likely to be much greener than flashy, resource-intensive interfaces. On a related note, Microsoft's internal datacenter monitoring program, called Scry, can provide detailed info on power consumption, carbon emissions, etc., for the whole datacenter, groups of servers, or applications. Microsoft already uses Scry to charge its business units for the datacenter resources used.
